Maris is an eighty year old African-American woman originally from the rural south now living in North Philadelphia.  She was the epitome of a “good” southern woman-poised and soft spoken and the matriarch of her family. She has lived through segregation and the great migration to Northern America. She was the epitome of a “good” southern woman-poised and soft spoken. The memory of her life floods her mind as she suffers from dementia. She spends her days now fading in and out of a time long gone.
